Gavin is a Knowledge Transfer Partnership Associate working in partnership between Stratagem and University College London. Whilst at Stratagem, Gavin is tasked with modelling football to understand the key, important players and their impact on a game. Through statistical and deep learning techniques he aims to graphically capture both player ability and player interactions, to further improve match simulation for prediction, and aid other markets within sports betting.
Before joining Stratagem he completed an MMathStat at Newcastle University, writing the dissertation, “The Bivariate Poisson Distribution and its Applications to Football”. In July 2016, Gavin achieved a PhD in statistics from Newcastle University, with a thesis entitled, “Bayesian Inference for Stochastic Differential Mixed-effects Models”. He has also held research associate positions offering statistical support for the Customer-Led Network Revolution, and later assisting in creating futuristic materials for the next generation of technological chips.
Outside of Stratagem Gavin can be found watching films, lurking in shadows, or standing on a stage attempting to make people laugh, cry (or both).
“Stratagem is a throng of passionate, intelligent people from differing fields, coming together to use all available resources in an effort to eke out every last minuscule detail of understanding concerning the world of sport”.
